The Roulettes Opening The Australian Grand Prix

Every week, iPhoneography Oz invites one of its Instagram followers to cover a topic about Australian society. Two months ago Melbourne hosted the Australian Grand Prix, the first round of the Formula 1 World Championship. @anneeadams was there and this is a preview of what she experienced.

iPhoneography Oz: Who are you in less than 140 characters?
anneadams: I'm a semi-retired early childhood teacher. Now I'm an iphoneograher. I love travel, reading, painting and mobile photography.

iOz: Your photo shows The Roulettes opening the Australian Grand Prix. Can you explain what it is?
a: The Roulettes are the Royal Australian Air Force's elite formation aerobatic display team. Their planes are PC-9/A's. They flew past my living room window on their way to perform at the Australian Grand Prix. Their aerial acrobatics were fantastic! I was really happy to get this photo because last year I didn't grab my phone fast enough.

iOz: What is life is like in Melbourne during the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix?
a: Melbourne is really busy and buzzing during Formula 1 week. We have lots of international visitors here. Melbournians really get into the spirit. I can hear the F1 cars from my place and see the crowds of people heading to the track around Albert Park.

iOz: If you were stuck in Australia with an unlimited budget and a week in front of you, what would you do?
a: Unlimited budget - wow!! I'd go to the Kimberley. I'd love to explore this remote and unique area of Australia. I'd stay at Cape Leveque Bush Camp and take a scenic flight over The Bungle Bungles.

iOz: What was one of the best travel experiences you've ever had in Australia?
a: Australia is so vast and so diverse! If I have overseas visitors I love to take them on a road trip down the Great Ocean Road in Victoria. You can enjoy the spectacular 'shipwreck coast' views. My visitors love to see kangaroos and koalas in the wild and I love the eucalypt forests of The Otways. There are pics from these trips on my IG account. For myself, my iconic trip was when I went to Uluru and Kata Tjuta in the Northern Territory. Most Aussies live in coastal cities but the outback is the soul of Australia.

iOz: What's your favourite photo on the blog?
a: Hard to choose!!! I like all the pics of the outback and those of the Australian beaches. How about the one of the Car Eating Cows sign :)

iOz: What kind of photos can our readers see on @anneadams's Instagram feed?
a: My IG feed is very eclectic. It veers between art edits, travel shots, street photography, and views from my daily life. It's like a visual diary. Doing painterly edits is my favourite way to express myself creatively.

iOz: What will you be doing for the next hour?
a: I will be having a coffee in Hawthorn. Melbourne has the best coffee and I love it!!!

iOz: We're switching roles, ask us anything!
a: Have you considered having a presence on EyeEm?
iOz: Travel blogging is really exciting but really time-consuming as well. That's the reason why we only focus on Instagram. However we're always looking for help from new volunteer collaborators. If you have a passion for Australia, contact us!

iOz: A last word?
a: Mobile photography is an absorbing addiction. It's enriched my life. Nowadays I take notice of the beauty around me rather than taking it for granted.

Are Milkshakes The Best Post Beach Treats?

Every week, iPhoneography Oz invites one of its Instagram followers to cover a topic about Australian society. Today, meet @picturepostie. She posted this photo of post beach treats at Sebastian's Food & Wine in Melbourne area. Actually tell us why you want to try these milkshakes in the comments below and you may win 2 free milkshakes at Sebastian's Food & Wine!

iPhoneography Oz: Who are you in less than 140 characters?
picturepostie: An Aus iPhone photo printing app! Edit & order phone/Instagram/Facebook pics for quality photo & canvas prints delivered to your door. App free in iTunes!

iOz: A milkshake as a treat after a trip to a popular beach on Port Phillip Bay. Knowing that it's winter for most of our readers in the Northern Hemisphere, aren't you ashamed?
p: Actually isn't winter the best time for milkshakes? Keeps them nice and cold!

iOz: Australia has (a lot of) milkshakes and thickshakes. What's the difference?
p: Thickshakes have double ice cream to make them thicker! You need a thicker straw too!

iOz: If you were stuck in Australia with an unlimited budget and a week in front of you, what would you do?
p: Woah, just 1 week, what a stressful thought, there's so many awesome places to see! I've never actually been to Ayers Rock or the Kakadu! I know, what kind of Aussie am I? I'd visit these places and take lots of photos on my iPhone, so I could print them later through Picture Postie!

iOz: What was one of the best travel experiences you've ever had in Australia?
p: Jervis Bay on the South Coast of New South Wales, just a 3 hours drive south from Sydney. The sand is the whitest in Australia apparently and we saw dolphins!

iOz: What's your favourite photo on the blog?
p: Surfing in Agnes Water from about 5 weeks ago.

iOz: What do you like to take pictures of the most on Instagram?
p: Things you find on your daily travels, those little gems that put a smile on your face!

iOz: What will you be doing for the next hour?
p: Catching the train home from work! I wish I was more exciting!

iOz: We're switching roles, ask us anything!
p: Can you please tell everyone about our new Australian iPhone App?! People seriously LOVE it so we just want to be able to let everyone know! Even people in the Northern Hemisphere might have Australian friends to tell!
iOz: We'd like to try the app first. Why not exploring a partner arrangement between Picture Postie and iPhoneography Oz?

iOz: A last word?
p: Download Picture Postie, you'll love it!

A Walk Through Melbourne's Laneways

Every Monday, iPhoneography Oz invites a blogger to cover a topic about Australian society. Today, meet Kristina from Germany who has recently moved to Melbourne. She writes the blog Le fabuleux destin which tells her adventures in Australia and around the world. She loves to capture the hidden laneways of Melbourne, she enjoys drinking a flat white in the sunshine and has recently started to learn surfing.

This is a guest post by Kristina of Le fabuleux destin.

Melbourne is famous for its laneways, great coffee and its colourful street art. One of my favourite pastimes is to explore not only Melbourne's CBD, but also the numerous suburbs which all feature great street art – sometimes in prominent places, sometimes down small alleys or in hidden courtyards. Start your quest in the city centre in Hosier Lane opposite Federation Square – the most famous street art lane of Melbourne. Don't miss the cool picture in Chinatown at the back wall of a car park (photo) - it is one of my favourites. Take your time to venture out to Fitzroy, Collingwood, Brunswick, Richmond, Northcote or Footscray and keep your eyes open for some real gems. When your legs get tired of too much exploring, settle down in one of the many cafes along the way, sip a flat white and recover from the urban adventures.

  • Hometown: Frankfurt, Germany.
  • Most awkward Australian moment: Numerous misunderstandings of the Aussie accent which did lead to very awkward conversations and questions!
  • Favourite Australian place: Mornington Peninsula, Cradle Mountain in Tasmania, Margaret River region.
  • Worst Australian place: Chinese restaurant in Hobart - just awful!
  • Vegemite or Nutella: Nutella, no question.

What do you think? Have you been to Melbourne? What are the best things to do in Melbourne? Could you give us a reason why Melbourne is the world's most livable city? Let us know in the comments below!

Running The Sydney Marathon In A School Dress

iPhoneography Oz gives a try to Guest Blogging! We are going to regularly invite a blogger to cover a topic about Australian society. Today, Sarah gets the ball rolling. Just like us, she is about to run the Sydney Marathon (Blackmores Sydney Running Festival) on September 16. Except that she is going to run in a dress!

This is a guest post by Sarah Forsterling of Social 4 Social

Lots of my friends are freaked out about turning 30. That it means they should be well on their way to wherever they had decided they wanted to get to when they were 21. But for some reason that is not me. Not sure if it is because I look young, have ringlets and don't wear much makeup or just because I see 30 as an opportunity to mark where you want to go. You are old enough to have an idea of the sort of person you want to be and the sort of attitude and energy you want to encourage in those around you. So I am pumped about turning 30 in two weeks time.

I love to do lots of things. I love reading, writing and running. I love spending time with my family and friends. And I love being empowered to make the decisions that affect my life. So I thought why not mark my 30 milestone by doing something that encourages all of these things - health, fitness, appreciation for the outdoors and education.

For my birthday I am not asking for presents or champagne. Instead, I am running the Sydney Marathon in a school dress, asking my family to join me and asking my mates to donate $10 to help send girls to school in Sierra Leone.

Not your typical 30th birthday celebration, but one which I will remember and one which I hope encourages me, and those around me, to continue to be positive, motivated and realise you can always have an impact.

I am going to turn 30, being hot, sweaty and healthy. Surrounded by motivated people, taking in some of Australia's best sites and being proud of helping share the joy of education with deserving girls. Hard to beat that.

If you feel like supporting Sarah you can do that over here, she would love it. Or you can find her on twitter or pop over to see her blog.

Fit n Fast South Yarra

Many sports have been programmed in recent days on iPhoneography Oz. It continues today with a visit to a Fit n Fast gym with whom we have a partnership. We do not know if this is the cheapest gym in Melbourne, but Fit n Fast South Yarra is the cheapest gym in South Yarra. This is what is written at the entrance of the mall where it is located. Fit n Fast has three locations in Melbourne. This one is the closest to the city centre. The gym occupies the second floor of Vogue Plaza. The space is relatively limited, but again, everything is clean and in excellent condition. Whenever possible, avoid peak hours so you do not have to wait, especially in the free weights section.

Introduction To Netball With Melbourne Vixens

Today we discover netball, after having experienced Australian football for the first time yesterday. Netball is a sport for women whose rules are inspired by basketball, minus contacts. We attended a game of the ANZ Championship, the pre-eminent netball league in the world. In Melbourne, Melbourne Vixens plays its home games at Hisense Arena, close to the Melbourne Cricket Ground. This arena also recently hosted the 2012 UCI Track Cycling World Championships. We will not hide the fact we had preconceived negative ideas about the sport. But we realized that these ideas are not justified if netball has become the main female team sport in Australia and New Zealand! The game is tight. The atmosphere in the stands is electric. Our prejudice has quickly dissipated. We ended up cheering and being stressed as true Vixens fans! For the record the Melbourne Vixens won their match that day against the Queensland Firebirds in the last seconds after being held throughout the game.

Introduction To Australian Football With Melbourne FC

The Melbourne FC invited us to attend a game of Australian Football League: a first for iPhoneography Oz. The game took place inside the prestigious Melbourne Cricket Ground, with opposing team the "Saints" of St Kilda FC, another team from Melbourne. A dream place to watch a footy game! The atmosphere recalls the National Rugby League, but the game is even more intense. You can not get bored, it simply never stops! Soccer "starlets" players look like amateurs compared to them. For the record, although Melbourne FC lost that night, we will follow them throughout the season armed with our scarfs and our Demons horns (nickname of the team).

National Sports Museum

The National Sports Museum in Melbourne stands on the ground floor of the Melbourne Cricket Ground which we talked about yesterday (save $5 on your admission if you buy a ticket for the MCG Tour and the museum). Once again, this is a place to add on your list of things to do in Melbourne, especially for the sports enthusiasts that we are. The National Sports Museum exhibits more than 2,500 objects related to the greatest moments in Australia's sporting history. During the visit we can see that it is such a rich one (especially cricket)! The most striking objects for us are: Cathy Freeman's swift-suit and Ian Thorpe's full body swimsuit (the Australian having won the most Olympic gold medals) they wore at the Sydney 2000 Summer Olympics, Cadel Evans's yellow bike on which he won the 2011 Tour de France (a first for an Australian) and Jack Brabham's car with which he became Formula One world champion for the third time in 1966 (photo). The icing on the cake: "Game On", an interactive gallery that allows you to come into play and measure yourself against the greatest champions of cricket, Australian football, cycling, etc. We love it! For your information, the museum is large enough to spend two hours (ok, we lost "a little bit" of time in "Game On").

Melbourne Cricket Ground: One Of The Largest Stadium In The World

A visit to the Melbourne Cricket Ground should be on your things to do list during a stay in Melbourne. Why? Because the "Ground" or "G", as called by the locals, is the largest stadium in Australia and the ninth or tenth largest stadium in the world with a capacity of 100,000 spectators. It is ahead of the Camp Nou in Barcelona (Spain), home of FC Barcelona, and the Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). It also holds the world record for the highest light towers located in a stadium. It is an institution in Melbourne, home of the 1956 Summer Olympics and 2006 Commonwealth Games. But its use does not only serve national and international sport (cricket, football, Australian football, rugby etc.). The greatest singers and bands have performed here: David Bowie, Paul McCartney, U2, Madonna, The Rolling Stones, Michael Jackson, Elton John, Billy Joel and The Police.
We attended a tour at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Taking part in their guided tour is an unforgettable experience. The view from the top floor of the stands is nothing less than impressive. The guide makes sure you do not miss a thing about the behind the scenes of this architectural gem. Each tour lasts approximately one hour. The Melbourne Cricket Ground also hosts the National Sports Museum which will be discussed tomorrow.

Discover Melbourne with Real Melbourne Bike Tours

Are you looking for inspiration and wondering what to do in Melbourne? Have you got only a few hours to discover Melbourne? Let's get straight to the point: Real Melbourne Bike Tours is a not to be missed activity! We walked in Brisbane: it was good but quickly tiring. We drove in Sydney and Canberra: it was less tiring than walking but we missed far too many places. So we joined Murray, the owner of Real Melbourne Bike Tours, on one of his tours through the streets of Melbourne. We knew that Melbourne is full of hidden secrets. We did not know that Murray was one of them! He is a wealth of information and is passionate about what he does, you never feel like you are falling into a tourist trap. A tour with him is the ideal way to visit Melbourne and learn about the areas of the city in so little time. The tour lasts four hours including a coffee break in Little Italy and a lunch at the Queen Victoria Market (all included). You come out absolutely delighted and will want more! Any first stay in Melbourne should begin with a tour in the company of Murray.

The Best Cafes And Restaurants In Melbourne

Melbourne is a city full of hidden secrets. We already spoke about the street art of Melbourne. This is the same for bars, cafes and restaurants. We were further informed that many businesses deliberately choose to install their facilities in out of sight locations. This allows them to create a buzz around the opening, consumers disclosing the new find to their social circles which, in turn, spreads the word. This is a risky marketing strategy but that seems to be a new trend in Melbourne's industry. So which are the best cafes and restaurants in Melbourne? We will not answer this question here. We will leave you the pleasure of strolling through the streets, to seek and discover by yourself. We are still going to give you a few clues to tease you and inspire you to find some of our favorite places in Melbourne:
  • A rooftop bar/cinema on the fifth floor of a building (no elevator): amazing view of Melbourne's Central Business District,
  • An alley in the heart of the city which is lined with restaurants and cafes (photo): menus and windows are really appealing,
  • An Italian cafe, probably Melbourne's largest, which is reminiscent of those found in Milan: the selection of pastries is impressive (and tasty!).

Mecca Bah Melbourne

Mecca Bah Melbourne is a good place to experience middle-eastern cuisine. The restaurant is located in the modern area of Melbourne Docklands, a product of an ongoing urban renewal project. This vast suburb is also worth a visit day or night. But back to Mecca Bah Melbourne. We tried the Tunisian merguez, the lamb tajine and a baklava to finish. A delight. We only regret that in this restaurant the food is not as spicy as expected. Apparently it has been adapted to Western palates, while the beauty of middle-eastern cuisine is the use of spices. But it is a good alternative for an introduction to this cuisine, have a look at the menu. The atmosphere of the restaurant is also rather western when we were expecting something more oriental. However the view over the waters of the Yarra River and Melbourne Central Business District is amazing! Ask for a table near the windows so you do not miss it.

Free Activities In Melbourne

If you have read our recent post about Melbourne, you already know that Melbourne is a great city. The culture of Melbourne occupies a leading role and most activities are free. Here are our favorite cultural places so far:
  • State Library of Victoria: more than 1,5 million books and 16,000 periodicals. The architecture of La Trobe Reading Room and its dome is awesome;
  • Australian Centre for the Moving Image: immersion in the world of film, television and digital culture. Screen Worlds, the permanent exhibition brings together rare archive footage, fascinating objects and interactive amazing displays.
Many art galleries, museums and theaters. Many cultural events and concerts as well. But Melbourne is also a place of choice for street art. Lonely Planet also places them as a must see. We love getting lost in the Central Business District walking through Melbourne's laneways in search of graffiti. We also love coming across impromptu concerts on the sidewalks (photo).

Old Melbourne Gaol

iPhoneography Oz spent the day in jail at the Old Melbourne Gaol. No, do not worry, nothing serious. We simply visited the building transformed into a museum a few years ago. This historical place situated in the heart of Melbourne allows you to experience the harsh reality of a nineteenth century prison. It is interesting and differs from traditional museums. We suggest you to start the visit with the police watch house and experience what it is like to be arrested. It is extremely alike to (what we assume to be) the reality, so much that one wonders if the actor who charges you and locks you up is not an ex-cop. Was our favourite part of the visit! Then continue into the cells of the gaol where you will learn about the infamous Ned Kelly, whose story was brought to the cinema several times (Mick Jagger and Heath Ledger played the role of the bushranger). Allow about two hours for the entire visit.

iPhoneography Oz was a guest of National Trust of Australia (Victoria).

Visit Melbourne

We do not know where to begin to tell you why you should visit Melbourne. This is certainly one of the best cities in the world. Located in the southeast of Australia, bordering the vast Port Phillip Bay, Melbourne is the capital of the State of Victoria. It is often referred to the cultural and sporting capital of Australia. Melbourne is home of the Australian Open (tennis), the Australian Grand Prix (Formula 1) and the Melbourne Cup (horse race), three major events in their respective categories in the international scene. It is also recognized for its cultural scene, including museums, theaters and street art.
Melbourne is the second largest city in Australia after Sydney. It has over four million people, over one-third were born overseas. This multiculturalism is felt especially in the cuisine. The city has indeed countless multi-ethnic restaurants.
Architecture is no exception either. Along the Yarra River, the Central Business District (Melbourne CBD) is an interesting mix of historic buildings of Victorian era and modern skyscrapers.
The main drawback could be Melbourne climate. Melbourne is indeed the coldest Australian capital city in winter, although it remains within the limit of endurance (no snow).
Melbourne is a must see in Australia! We will focus on several major points of interest in the coming days.
