Cable Beach

A trip to Broome would not be complete without seeing Cable Beach (and going to Matso's), long recognized as one of the world's best beaches. This long stretch of pristine white sand 22 kilometers is the ideal place to relax in the sun, take a swim, fish or just enjoy the beautiful sunsets over the Indian Ocean. Pay attention though, heading north on the west coast, Broome is one of the first places where jellyfish are reported.

Eighty Mile Beach

Eighty Mile Beach, which technically equates to around 130 kilometres, stretches over 200 kilometres long and 100 metres wide in reality. This white sand beach of Western Australia is located between Port Hedland and Broome. The place is famous for its fishing, shell collecting and bird watching. Actually it seems that each year, half a million shorebirds come to rest and feed on the beach after migrating from the Arctic Circle. It is also a great place to watch the sunset over the Indian Ocean. The pleasures of the beach without being disturbed by any annoying neighbours!

Steep Point, The Westernmost Point Of Australia

We started the beginning of our travels with a visit to Byron Bay, where the lighthouse is the easternmost point of Australia. Today, we are at Steep Point in Shark Bay. It is the westernmost point of Australia. But the place is also extremely famous because it is one of the world's most successful land based game fishing locations. Spectacular scenery with Zuytdorp Cliffs, almost 200 metres above the ocean, is the icing on the cake. Note that the access to Steep Point is by 4WD only. Unless you prefer to take off for a scenic flight (photo) which might take your breath away.

Marion Bay And Its Gems

Marion Bay is the last town at the end of the Yorke Peninsula before entering the Innes National Park. We should also mention locality because out of season, Marion Bay is very quiet. The isolation is what gives it its charm though. There are many places in Australia where the environment is preserved. Marion Bay is one of them. Its beach is absolutely beautiful. In good weather it is even possible to see Kangaroo Island off the coast. Locals are very proud of their town, this peaceful paradise for fishermen, and it is in their hearts to keep it well away from any urbanization for as long as possible. Lovers of fine food, during a visit to the region, be sure to stop at the Marion Bay Tavern. This unpretentious restaurant serves excellent innovative cuisine. The portions are very generous and composed of fresh produce. Marion Bay Tavern is famous for its wood-fired pizzas but make sure you also try its seafood. Purely delightful, sea view dining!

Discovering The Yorke Peninsula

The Yorke Peninsula, west of Adelaide, is a world apart. An almost remote destination with small pockets of civilization surrounded by nature. At the heart of the land is an agricultural community. It is also possible to visit some of the farms. Along the coast there is a mixture of dramatic cliffs, beautiful beaches and some world class surfing spots. The Yorke Peninsula is also popular with fishermen who travel there from all over South Australia to catch Blue Swimmer Crabs, Southern Salmon and Southern Rock Lobster. But a visit to the region is also an opportunity to delve into history by visiting the Copper Coast which is formed by the towns of Moonta, Kadina and Wallaroo. There are remains of copper mining from the nineteenth century, so well preserved that some are real treasures.

The Best Fish and Chips in Australia?

Tuross Boatshed & Cafe is an establishment located a few kilometres north of Narooma in the town of Tuross Head. This is the kind of unpretentious place whose reputation spreads by word of mouth. After appearing in Getaway and Alive and Cooking, two popular Australian travel and cooking shows, Tuross Boatshed & Cafe received iPhoneography Oz in its temple of Fish and Chips (photo) and seafood. Burgers are also on the menu, including the famous Meat 'Lot' Burger, the traditional Australian burger with bacon, egg, beetroot and pineapple. Divine! The reputation of the snack extends beyond Australia and we understand why! It is simple and it is good, all served on the idyllic Tuross lakeside. On site, you can hire a boat to go fishing or canoe to explore the surroundings. There is also a shop where you will find everything you need for your fishing getaway. This is definitely a place to put on your to-do list while visiting the South Coast.

Note that the Tuross Boatshed & Cafe is currently for sale. Anyone interested to take up this flourishing business on one of the most beautiful spots along the Australian coastline?

Batemans Bay

After a detour inland to the Kangaroo Valley, we are back on the southern end of the Grand Pacific Drive. Batemans Bay is a charming town at the mouth of the Clyde River. The main activities of the region are obviously revolved around the ocean (including deep sea fishing). There are also beautiful beaches to discover around the city. Walking on the beach at sunrise in Batehaven is most refreshing. It would be better to stay during off peak season to avoid the swarm of tourists in summer from Canberra, located just two hours away. Not far to the north, it would seem that paradise lies in Jervis Bay where we find probably the whitest sand in the world. We missed it but will be returning in an upcoming visit to the area!

Barramundi Fishing On The Sunshine Coast

Have you heard about barramundi? It seems that it is one of the most sought after fish to catch in Australia. Suncoast Barra Fishing Park is a very friendly and quiet place where you will find everything you need to spend a good time fishing including rod hire, whether with family or friends. Located close to the beaches of the Sunshine Coast, it is open every day of the year. The staff are very welcoming and deliver valuable advice on fishing techniques. Pack a lunch and a couple of ice cold beers. Find your spot. Bait your hook. Cast your line. And wait for the big bite (and tell us how to catch a barramundi please)! Is your BBQ ready? Barramundi fillets are on the way!
